Established in 1903, the original layout was designed by Willie Park, then the Professional at Musselburgh. With scenic views to Holy Island and northwards towards Scotland, 'The Fields' is the most northerly course in England.

With lush generous fairways and clinging semi-rough, the course provides a challenge to all golfing categories. Starting with a mild par four, the course quickly develops into a challenge, with the 2nd hole leaving one pondering just how a second shot will hold the green. Another notable hole is the next - a 521 yard par five aptly named 'Sea View', which sweeps down towards the clifftops to a well bunkered green. After the turn, with the hardest holes left behind, the homeward journey is the time to relax and get a good score going. But don't relax too much, the shorter holes can produce bogies also!
