Set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southport's premier residential area - Hesketh Park - is Hesketh Golf Club, the town's oldest golf club, founded in 1885. The course is at the northern end of south-west Lancashire's sand dune system, which is home to so many great golf courses.
Professional championship golf has been played on these famous old links from the club's earliest days, and the course has been regularly used as a final qualifying course when The Open is played at Royal Birkdale. The course sets a unique challenge with half of the holes threaded through tall sand dunes, whilst the other holes border the Ribble estuary. Across the estuary the hills of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire provide an unforgettable backdrop.
The English Golf Union has its roots at Hesketh Golf Club with a former Hesketh Captain becoming the Union's first President. The drive up to the imposing clubhouse is alongside the par 3 16th hole that Henry Cotton described as "the best short hole in Lancashire" and fills the visitor with anticipation at the prospect of playing on these fine links.
Two current European Tour professionals, Lee Slattery and Mathew Baldwin, learnt their golf as juniors and colts at Hesketh.
The club runs a week long Festival in August every year (6th -12th August) which, unusually for open competitions, offers weekend golf for both men and women.
