Athy Golf Club

Geraldine, Athy

Athy Golf Club was formed in 1906 as a nine hole course and was later extended to 18 holes in 1993. At that time, the course had a par of 71 and it stretched to 6,400 yards from the medal tees. More recently the club carried out some major developmental work on the course to create a tougher test of golf. The teeing grounds on eleven holes were changed, a new par 5 was built, where the third shot is to a green protected by a lake. New trees were planted and 33 new bunkers constructed.  The last three holes at Athy are now even more demanding and the 16th and 17th holes are considered by many to be among the most difficult consecutive par 4's to be found anywhere. The 18th is also a more testing finishing hole because of the prevalence of bunkers down the length of it. Despite all these changes the course is a fair test of golf and there is considerable enjoyment to be had in playing it.
