The Medal Course is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most historic in Scotland, with golf having been played there for more than 400 years. The first record of the game being played on the links was as early as 1562, making it the fifth oldest in the world. Montrose can also lay claim to have been, at one stage in its' history, the course with the greatest number of holes. When Musselburgh had 5 holes, Montrose had 25!
The present Championship course owes much to a design by Willie Park Jnr in 1903 and encapsulates the true traditions of Scottish links golf; there is everything to test the golfer's shot-making ability to the full. Montrose has hosted many important events including the Scottish Professional Championship and the British Boys. In recognition of the excellence of the course, it was chosen as a Final Qualifying Course for the 2007 Open held at Carnoustie.
